Kongqueping Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located on the northern wing of a syncline at Kongqueping to the east of the Jiangjun Temple, east of Laojunmiao, northern Qitai County, Xinjiang. It was named by the No. 106/58 Party under the Xinjiang Petroleum Administration in 1958, and was first issued publicly by the Department of Earth Sciences under the Academy of Sciences of China (1989), and formally cited in The Paleozoic Erathem of Xinjiang in 1991.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandstone. Composed mainly of yellow-green green-grey and grey medium- and thick-bedded clayey, calcareous, siliceous fine-grained sandstones, and clayey siltstones, intercalated with yellow-green alternating with purple thin-bedded clayey fine-grained sandstone, dark-purple greywacke, coarse-grained sandstone, pebble-bearing lithoclastic sandstone, quartz-lithoclastic sandstone and clayey fine-grained sandstone. Lower member is characterized by varicolored (purple, green, yellow, etc.) clayey and siliceous fine-grained sandstone and siltstone. Upper member is coarser grained, dominated by dark green color, and intercalated with purple polymineralogic sandstone. Thickness is about 1507 m (Permian lexicon entry) or 2036 m (Carboniferous lexicon entry)
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unknown contact relationship with the underlying strata (diachronous with Jiangjunmiao Fm on chart). Carboniferous lexicon entry says " Conformable contact with the underlying Liukeshu Fm".
Upper contact
Conformable with overlying Pingdiquan Fm
Regional extent
Distributed in the area of the Karamaili Mt. Distributed on both sides of the Kongqueping syncline in the Laojunmiao area of East Junggar.

Fossils
Plant fossils (phytolites) as represented by Noeggerathiopsis sp., Calamites schutzeiformis, C. undulatus, C. gigas, Noeggerathiopsis sp., Lepidodendron sp., Palaeostachya sp. Bivalves such as Abiella subovata; as well as Spore-pollens.

It is interpreted as continental deposits.
